last night, for the 1st time, my 98 grand prix's batt light came on.

my battery light came on. I was on the hiway, scared to death, but it didn't act like it wanted to stall. it stayed on a while, then off, and came on again. went off once I hit town, but wed also had a heavy rain earlier in the night. battery is just 5 mo old. any ideas?

Sounds even more like a failing alternator. Check the belt as suggested above and have the alternator tested. It probably won't leave you stranded, the battery is there as your backup, but at some point it will stop charging altogether and then your battery will slowly go dead.
