Platinum is the main catalyst, platinum and palladium are the main precious metals in a cat. There is about 5 grams of platinum, @$43 gram = $214 .... Palladium is $28/gram. That's why they get stolen. Typically a used cat will fetch about $100, from a big car, the precious metals have to be extracted. They also contain rhodium, in a small car about 3 grams, to a big truck up to 10g or more and fluctuates daily, and trades at about the same price as platinum. More than gold.

Hi Jim, I got those from searching several places, and that $100 is for a cat from a single exhaust V8 and the high end of the graph. Not saying you got taken, just would have had to go to a LOT of hassle to get that much. If you just went to local scrap place, that's about right. They collect and re-sell, and don't extract and get more for a bigger amount to sell. Not to mention Dec '13 precious metals were at a 5 year low.
