2004 Pontiac Grand Am; in snow,ruts etc., do I shift from 3 to 2 to 1 as listed or?

despite various answers from friends etc. what do I shift into to get out of ruts or buried driveway? answers have went from "car will shift on its own"? or remarks about a female driver.

The gear choice won't help much if any. Snow tires will help or better yet studded tire, chains or cables. The trick is to not spin the tires so go light on the go pedal.

Shifting gears manually will help u when u have to do sudden stops or foing downhill instead of slamming on brakes
