my 2001 grand am was running fine and then one day overheated quickly.
when i pulled over i realized it had dumped all the antifreeze. saw a white
steam coming from under the hood, when i looked the hose furthest
towards the back attached to the coolant tank was split and could not see
what it connected too on the other end of that hose. what could have
caused this to happen, and does anyone know where that hose goes too?

That hose is the overflow and when you overfill your radiator with antifeeeze it comes out of the overflow the hose itself is not supposed to be connected to anything just meant to help not flood the radiator with coolant also help air trapped in the engine come out. I have the same year of car and model and this is exactly what happened to my car all I did was change out the thermostat also disconnected the radiator hose connected to where you put coolant and let your car run to let all of the gas trapped in your engine out. water should also come out with the air. My car runs like new now that I have done that and it only costed me 10 dollars hope this helps
