What does it mean when the theft system light goes on? Is this something to be concerned about and/or needs to be repaired?

It doesn't stay on consistently & my car starts & runs with the light on.  Sometimes the light comes on & other times it doesn't light up.

Telling you the security system is on, it turns off when the car is started with the key. The light should go out when the car is turned on with the key.
