Good advice from tennisshoes. A lot depends on what maintenance has been done up until now and whether or not you're having actual performance issues. If its been neglected for years it might need quite a lot to get it back in shape. If its been well looked after and is generally running fine it will need very little. Check your owners manual for guidance on basic maintenance. If you're having specific problems with the car address them directly. And finally, unless you have tons of extra money laying around that you just have to spend, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
