What is cause of Rubbing sound ?

Went in to have rear brakes checked, due to rubbing sound.  Brakes were fine,
but was told both the tranny and engine mounts were shot, to the point the engine
had shifted slightly down and to one side. Could that be the actual cause of the
sound?
