For a 1993 Nissan King Cab VE 30 2 wheel drive. Can you test the starter while still
hooked up or do you have to remove it first?

quick and dirty test, make sure the truck is in neutral an brake set, then just for a brief second short across the solenoid with a screwdriver with insulated handle. If it goes, it might be the solenoid . if it doesn't go, it is likely the starter. also, check the starter relay before you do anything.
