i have a 1994 audi cabriolet and the trunk will not open with the key. Is there any particular way to resolve this without replacing said lock

ok, you have to insert the key, turn to the horizontal level. this is where it gets a little rough, push the key in while pulling up hard on the trunk lid until it releases. this is actually from the owners manual

Experienced this! Solution was to use a extension & socket, after yanking boot lid cover off thru ski hole. A mission. Then remove 3 or 4 10mm bolts on boot lid latch. Only way I know. It took 2 months but got it open. Via Ski hole with torch in boot to see bolts
