More than likely this is your issue,it is the neutral safety switch on the side of the transmission is bad.

That's what I thought and just put a new one on and the problem is still there

Have you checked the linkage on the transimission?

That's what is attached the the nss right? How would on know if something was wrong with that I'm not as mechanically inclined as I should be.

If the linkage is not set right ,this would explain having to crank in neutral,and hard shiffting,if you are not familuar with it take it to a trust worthy mechanic.

Hi--I just got my alternator changed today on my 2002 Mitsubishi Montero Sport LS AWD, the D (drive) indicator does not light up when I shift to the drive position?
