2006 mercury gran marquis ls won't go into drive unless I push the brake 3 or 4 times. What could the problem be?

That's sensor brake release stuck in position locking the transmission shit. By pushing several times the brakes, it unlock it. A mechanic can fix it for less than $120.00 if you cannot do it yourself. Nothing bad.

also could be a bad brake light switch, or almost broken wires going to it, down above the brake pedal pivot.
