In order for the check engine light to stay off is to have the vehicle scanned for the trouble codes, then fix the problem. Once the repair has ben made then the trouble codes can be cleared.

How do I clear check engine light without scanning codes

I have a 2000 town car and without a scan tool I have done this and it worked for me. Disconnecting the negative battery cable for about ten minutes should clear the check engine light.
