gear shifter on a 1994 lincoln town car was not going in gear park was reverse drive is between neutral and drive made a popping noise now won't go in gear at all

May be a problem with the shift interlock solenoid. Also the shift linkage should be checked to see if there is a problem there. Most of the time is has to do with the shift interlock. It is tied in with the brake light switch, make sure the brake lights are working.
