I bought a used 2005 grand cherokee laredo it says 4x4 on the back but there is no 4WD control?

It could automatic 4x4. Look under the vehicle to see if it has drive shafts going to the front wheels.

I had the same thing happen. When I asked mechanic at car dealership, he told me that you don't need to turn it on or off, supposedly always on...AWD? Does that sound right?
