Rear axle seal are leaking. Is there a way to refill the fluid or oil that in it till I can get them fixed?

If you look at the rear differential ( pumpkin ) there is a rubber plug you can remove and add gear oil.

How full does it need to be. I saw somewhere it should be about 1/2 inch away from the fill hole. Is that true?

Just fill until the gear oil comes out of fill hole then put plug back in.
