That sounds like failure of the crankshaft position sensor located on the bell housing, aimed at the engine flywheel, driver's side. Hard to get at but it's an inexpensive part. It may set a code P0320 and a check engine light. Sometimes when the engine cools off, it will restart. You might notice the engine hiccup and quit and the tachometer will drop quickly and back up if it keeps running. Check it out.
