Death Wobble Repair

Asked by Dan Jun 14, 2017 at 04:41 PM about the 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2001 Grand Cherokee.  At 45mph, going down hill and slightly
applying the brakes, the entire front end shakes to beat the band!  I have
replaced the track bar, lower control arms, rotors, pads and calipers...  still
shakes.  I am a bit concerned that the new control arms seem to have a fair
mount of play in them. Any help would be appreciated...  getting expensive!

Bearings are good, as well as tie-rod ends. Replaces the Shocks and the steering stabilizer. I put Moog lower control arms on. May replace them with Mopar parts, and if I still have the problem I will have the tires replaced, balanced, and aligned. They were going to be replaced by end of summer anyway... becoming a money pit!

Different solution: went through everything - track bar, stabilizer bar, tie rods, shocks, pit arm...and some certainly were worn and needed replacing. But, the real problem on my 2001 Grand Cherokee Laredo having the death wobble? The wrong size tires! So easy to check and just spaced on doing that first. Kept replacing all the aforementioned parts, kept going into the shop (noting they didn't find it either, 2 different shops). The tires were too small, they were also fairly narrow. Hope this helps someone. Problem was solved instantly and never had the death wobble since.
