I use Lysol through the air intake in the cowl. You can use unscented Febreeze also. Probably mold or mildew, or something fell down a defroster vent..

Lol, sounds like some little critter decided your vents were its final resting place. The only real fix is to have the dash removed and the ducts cleaned out. Or you can shoot it full if fabreeze forever. Possible mold. Do you have kids? Maybe a food item

a good dose of lysol wil usually do the trick. Turn a/c on to outside air and puton high. spary a good amount into outside inlet. This is the cowl area just below the wipers. Then turn vech. off and allow it to set awhile. Odds are it is a mold issue. Make sure the a/c drail is working properly. If no water drains ya need to clean out the drain. This vehc. drains into the frame, so you need to go get a push pin(this is used to hold some parts ouf the car together) also known as a christmas tree. You pull che carpet back on pass. side and loctte the lowest part of the a/c box. abt 2in round. drill a 1/4 in hole in the center of it. Get ready for the water to flow. You can then run a coat hanger through it. I recommed compressed air. Then put some silicone sealer on the backside of the plug and push it into place. This should do the trick. I hope this helps.........
