Put in new battery, something inside starts clicking without even putting the key in

Asked by Guru5CQJ9 Jan 12, 2018 at 12:42 PM about the 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee, one of 2
vehicles.  The rear drive shaft broke, so I parked it,
took battery out for other car.  I just put battery
back into the Jeep to drive to my neighbors (giving
him the car).  When I hook up battery, something
starts rapidly clicking.  This is without even getting
in the car.  When I put key in and turn, clicking
stops but nothing happens.  What would cause
clicking just hooking up battery?
