Maybe you have a brake fluid leak. Check the brake fluid level in the master cylinder.

What year is the Jeep? I had a friend with a '97 Grand Cherokee and the brake lines rusted through under the driver's side floor. There was fluid leaking and you could hear it when you hit the brake pedal. If the brake pedal is soft or goes to the floor, you definitely have a leak and should not drive it.
