Jeep will turn over but not start.

Asked by Desmond Sep 24, 2016 at 01:46 AM about the 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My jeep will not start at all. It ran fine around this
time last year but slowly it started acting up almost
like it was running out of gas. Then a few months
ago I took it from ky to Iowa and stayed for about a
week then the day I got back to ky it stalled out and
died. And it sounded like it was running out of gas
but it didnt. And so I put all new spark plugs in it
but that didn't work and I took off my fuel line to
see if it was getting fuel (it was) and it still didn't
run so after it sat there a couple days I went to
start it back up again but I messed with the cps on
top of the distributor and it started. Then a couple
days later it stopped running all together and I've
since changed out the fuel pump cleaned the
injectors changed the cps distributor and rotor and
even cleaned out the map sensor. But I had the
computer scanned and only found one code that
popped up was p1491 and all my other readings
were normal. I have no clue what is wrong with my
jeep. Please help me.

First, when you checked and say it had fuel, did it have enough pressure like 35psi or you just noticed some fuel coming out of the line. The P1491 is (PWM) fan relay, did the vehicle overheat? if it did, you might've blown a head gasket or cracked the head. If it didn't overheat, you may have a bad (PWM) fan relay, but it shouldn't keep it from starting up. Spray some brake cleaner in the throttle body and see if it starts for a bit, if it does, you have a fuel issue.

I just took the connector off at the fuel rail and seen gas coming out (I don't have a pressure tester) and it did over heat once but for only 3-5 mins and I shut it off immediately and I checked all the spark plugs and oil and there isn't any water in there. But I did get it to start about 2 weeks ago for about 5 seconds using ether.

If it started for a bit with ether, u have a fuel issue. Goto ur local auto parts store and borrow a fuel pressure gauge so u don't have to buy one. I know auto zone had them u just leave a $20 deposit

Okay thank you very much I'll check it out. I just assumed my pressure to be fine since I put a brand new pump in it and I use fuel treatment/injector ckeaner every so often.

Check catalytic converters. They can clog and build up back pressure until it will not run...
