Why doesnt my jeep shift properly when I gun it?

Okay, so I just purchased a 1998 Grand Cherokee Limited
5.2 over the weekend and it was probably sitting for awhile,
maybe a year and some. It has 213,000 kms on it and from
what I know the transmission sounds good, same with the
fluid in there... I did have to replace the battery, oil and oil
filter as well as the air filter. Anyway, when I try to put the
petal to the metal it doesnt shift properly into higher
speeds. Can anyone tell me why that is?

I checked the transmission fluid though, it smelled good and it was nice in colour. No metal shavings in there either... Anyhow, I'll take your advice, thank you!
