Can a diagnostic computer read trouble when there's no trouble codes set ?

I have a 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4.0l  it
idles rough and when it gets warm it starts blowing
white smoke that smells like fuel. But I'm getting
no trouble codes. I have changed the fuel pump
and that's all. How can I have engine trouble but
not throw trouble codes?

White smoke from exhaust is an indication of a blown head gasket...coolant is entering cylinder(s) the coolant vaporizes from the heat and that's the white smoke you see...if thats the case your coolant level will be low.
