Having problems with the jeep starting and staying started

Asked by Kayla Feb 10, 2017 at 11:16 AM about the 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Replaced the distributor cap and ignition coil and it
made no difference . now it smells like gas when I
try getting it to crank and backfires dark black.
What else do i look for as far as having it running
reliably
