What causes check engine light to come on in the cold months mornings

My 94 Jeep grand cherokee has a check engine light comes on in the morning when the cars cold. and sometiimes it it cut off like it has vapor lock and take a whiel to start back up. Also the smell of  raw exhaust fumes. the hand scanner says coolant temp sensor. where is that located?

It has nothing to do with the cold/hot/rain/snow/or/tue.your 02 heater sencers are shot/your computer is on its way out/the car is a 94.say thank you every day you get home.I am not picking on your car
