'94 Grand Cherokee shutting off when switching gears

Asked by Richard Mar 09, 2015 at 04:06 PM about the 1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a '94 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo that shuts off on me whenever I switch it into
reverse or drive. When I drove it home for the first time, it was fine on the highway and
then about a block away from my house it shut off on me. Somehow I managed to drive
to my house where it shut off on me again. Now, it starts fine, but it shuts off when I
switch gears. All the lights & the radio will stay on, but the truck itself shuts off. At first I
was told that the fuel filter might be clogged with all the dirt it collected from sitting for a
while. Now I'm being told that it might be an electrical problem. What could be happening
& how can I fix it ?

It sounds like your Torque Converter Solenoid. This solenoid can stay stuck on and cause the torque converter to stay locked up,this will cause the vehicle to stall whenever it is put into gear. The vehicle will start and run fine in park or neutral but will stall out as soon as it is put into gear. This is the most common failure that can cause this.
