Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I own a 99 audi a4. I replaced the battery and the car would start and after a few seconds the engine would stall. I had the fuel pump checked and it is working perfectly fine. The mechanic couldn't find out the problem and mentioned about an "immobilizer", is there such a thing? Also, the stereo displays a "safe" sign and wouldn't function. I don't have the manuals anymore which apparently contains the code of the stereo. Please help.

It could be the chip in youre ign. key that have to be recoded. After the battery have been disconnected some errors could appear. You prob. have to take it to an Audi service shop and have them the to read the error codes.

You can use autozone to get the code off your engine if you can get it there. Check your fuel pump as well as your fuel pump gasket, the gasket was a common problem in VW cars late 90's, it was made of a light weight plastic, not the highest quality. I have had it replaced on an a4 sport quattro and golf, my last two cars.
