Looking at a 2002 TT Quatro 5 speed for $5k.  Car has 140k miles but timing
belt, water pump, rear struts and top have been replaced.  Does car have much
life yet?

I would avoid such a car but if you can afford to lose the money or spend big bucks on repairs you might want to buy it. Have a mechanic check it out first.
