It will shift out of 2 only if I rev the engine but will not go into 3rd any

My 97 gmc sierra 4x4 1500 will not shift while in drive but if I put it in 2 it will move like normal. reverse works great. tranny is full of fluid. 4 Answers
Rpms shoot up to 4-5 when stepping on gas in drive. It is an automatic. When I manually shift it to 2 it drives fine no spiked rpms.
