won't shift out of first until 4,000 rpm and when it warms up it gets sluggish during acceleration.

Check your transmission. Fluid should be red....brown would indicate a problem...and filled to the correct level...between the hash marks or in the knurled zone with the engine running in park- must have quite a few miles on this one and is due for tranny maintainence now anyways- sounds low.
