headlights go off after a mile or so of driving then go on and off at intermitent times,

Sounds like the circuit breaker inside the headlight switch is tripping, resetting, tripping, resetting, and so on. Hope that helps! Jim

Check the wiring down by the starter. Most GMs have a fuseable link for the headlights. Perhaps it's loose. Hope that helps! Jim
