transmission in gmc sierra won't shift after a minute

I have a 19990 gmc sierra that will stop working after mabe a mile.  Have to stop and wait about 5 minutes and go again and keep repeating this.

Check the transmission fluid level, if it is full, then you have trany problems and would need to go to a trany shop for proper diagnosis.
