rear windows won't go up

After putting the top down on my 1990 mustang the other day the rear windows wouldn't go back up.  The motor is working; my mechanic thinks maybe the gears inside have disintegrated.  He's not sure how to go about diagnosing or fixing the issue.  Any suggestions?

Take it to someone that has experience with convertible tops. Also doing some "Googling" for convertible top issues and your make and model of vehicle may be helpful.
