We changed sensor, has new battery, attempts to turn over but nothing. People from AAA said it might be timing belt?

Could be. I would scan the codes and see if you have Crank/Cam correlation codes.

Car seemed to be running fine until trip up hot dusty mountain. When we stopped at our destination the car overheated and lots lots of fluid water and antifreeze.
