Chrysler Pt Cruiser Gear Problem

Question type: General

My car fails to clear engine light and battery light when i turn on the key, as a
result when i run the engine it engages into drive mode with a knock sound and
does not shift gears. if i quickly turn on and run the engine, all the lights
disappear and it sometimes engages all gears when driving, what could it be?

Next time check engine light comes on, go to a parts store and ask for a diagnostic. They can get you any codes that the car is finding. From there we could be of better help
