Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2004 Cruiser with 2.4 turbo. The
car will run fine and out of the blue it will
sputter and it continue until I pull over and
push in the trip meter to reset computer
and than take my code reader and clear
out the codes showing 1188 and 0234 it
will run perfectly fine with no engine light or
codes showing until again out of the blue it
will sputter again. This could happen just
after starting car or after driving for a good
hour. I spent a lot of money on this car with
new sensors and computer and on and on
and I’m really frustrated and don’t know
what to do.

I need help please.

Both codes indicate a high boost pressure from the engine forced induction system. Is your engine equipped with a turbo? This condition results in a loss of power and sputtering. Remove the booster and check the vaccum actuactor and wastegate for obstructions. You may want to check/replace the boost controller. Maybe another Guru have had experience with the problem and reply to you.

Yes, I have a 2.4 turbo. I appreciate the road map to ending this problem. Should you gave more info, that would be super. Should you have a diagram of location of these parts for inspection that eould be super- duper. Thank you, thank you, and I thank you again! Ron Wallenberg

Ron, go on line where you can find a diagram for the location of these parts as well as video that shows you how to do the job. It is not easy, but with the right tools and patience it can be accomplished. Hope you can solve the problem. You are welcome many times over!!

After executing repairs I am left with one crazy problem. I start the cruiser and after a short time, like engine warmed up, the engine light comes in and sputtering starts up again inconsistently. I stop and clear computer and codes, engine light goes out, the cruiser will run perfectly without any problems for hours of use. I can stop and as long as I come back before engine cools down, I have zero problems. I let it sit and sure enough the whole thing starts over. Any thoughts my friends. As always, I truly appreciate everyone’s valuable time. Ron Wallenberg
