Couple things could be the cause: First, it could be low on freon. If it's too low, the compressor will not come on. This is so the compressor does not get damaged by running "dry" so to speak. It's possible that it's a fuse or relay, but unlikely. Usually a fuse or relay will blow when wires get crossed or there is some kind of surge in whatever system the blown fuse/relay is responsible for. It could be a bad compressor. Reach in when the car is off and manually turn the compressor clutch (the spinning plate on the pulley) and see if it turns. If it does, thats good. It doesn't mean the compressor is good though, it only means that it's not seized up. Have an A/C test done. They'll remove the existing freon from the system, deep vacuum it, fill it back up with UV dye (to detect leaks) and send you on your way. If it goes back to not working within a couple months, you've got a pretty good size leak and will need to have it repaired.
