Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2004 Ford Taurus that the mechanic
says the AC clutch is bad but recommends
replacing the entire compressor but it still
cooling. Is it recommended to change both?

Price it both ways. The reason for doing both compressor and clutch is the mechanic might have trouble pulling the clutch pack from the compressor shaft and breaking more stuff doing so. Labor will be more trying to retain old compressor, which may soon fail too on the Taurus. Just go with the whole deal and be safe. These Fords have a bad reputation for compressors going out. I don't run mine unnecessarily. And remember, "Defrost" runs the A/C compressor all the time. He should have the proper A/C equipment to evacuate (vacuum pump) the system or air and moisture before recharging it. If in doubt, visit an automotive A/C shop to get it done right.
