Is it possible or advisable to adjust fuel consumption? And what is the resultant effect on the cars performance if the fuel consumption is adjusted(reduced)
The ECU adjusts the fuel ratio by using the upstream O2 sensor. You can not adjust it. If you desire more MPG's, inflate the tires, replace the spark plugs, change the air filter and go easy on the gas pedal.
yes. Lift your foot off the gas pedal. I quite remember when mistubishi made the 'jet injection' motor which used a third valve to inject air, getting the MOST out of the fuel, getting 50mpg in 1979!...this did not go over big and people were not too interested in smashingly good mileage...the thing had no power and could only pull 45 mph when climbin' up the hills goin' to Vegas from LA---kinda embarrasing~
Good answer TS.and Bob. Pretend there is dye pack on the gas petal that will explode if pushed too hard..but is set to not go off if you really need power to pass or some reason you need emergency acceleration
fuel consumption isnt really something you just reduce. Are you talking about fuel pressure? If you want to use less gas just go easy on the throttle

Here's my two cents. I own a 2003 explorer V6 xls. While visiting my neice one Sunday I decided to take the back way (state highway road) which is not traveled, except for locals leaving their little acreage in the midle of nowhere. The trip was a hundred or so miles. The weather was mild, so I did not require A/C. I filled up at the country store at the state highway. The trip was about two hundred miles in both directions. Gotta'er up to a blazing 55 mph and hit the speed control switch and poked along. Filled up at the same station on return and checked the gas mileage using the odometer and division method. Pinged out at a little over 25 miles per gallon. Not bad for a SUV. It all about keeping the maintanence up on the vehicle and your foot out of the gas pedal. Put the screwdriver and wrenches away, and stop surfing the web pages for devices which will boost your mileage by ten miles per gallon. If they existed Ford would have stuck one under the hood years ago to make the feds happy.
