should i be able to unlock anther ford explorer with my explorer key

Dito JB. I could switch out the keys on my 58 Pontiac and 63 Olds with no problem. Only the door and ignition though. Back then there was a separate key for the trunk and glovebox.

More to your question concerning your 2003. It is possible two different keys will open the door, but I doubt they will start the vehicle. The key has a chip in it. Personally, I cut a non chip key for a hide-a-key and hid it under the vehicle in the event I locked the keys in the vehicle. It opens the door only.
