I just bought a 2002 ford explorer xlt v8 and when it shifts it makes a slight vibration feel but not in all geers it will do it just a few times. Is this something i need to be worried about ?

It should be looked at, maybe nothing, I'm thinking u-joints, but if it was rebuilt you do not want to damage it.

Chances are you have a 5R55 W-S-N transmission. The most common problem with these vehicles concern the servo bores wearing out. The case is made of aluminum. The rod on the servo is made of hardened steel. Guess who is going to win with that matchup after 15 years. It sounds like you're losing pressure on the servo due to a bypass leak which causes the shudder. You can probably check out the net for info if you have one of the above three trannys.

NOTE: There is a workaround kit available for this problem involving larger servos, o-rings, etc. but few shops guarantee this fix for any extended period. Usually they recommend a new case with OEM servos. The kit usually runs about 200 bucks, labor I have no idea.

Try asking the former owner if he purchased a remanufactured tranny from Ford. The 5R55 models run between 2600 and 3200 plus installation. They are guaranteed for three years and unlimited miles. If he did, you may be covered for the repair.

OJ, The man that owned died so it would be a little hard to ask him other wise i would have. Rowefast, i do have an appt. today to take it in to a transmission shop. If they give me bad news i will be asking for my money back. Thank you all for your help.
