What might be the problem that the abs light is staying on after starting.

Could be a sensor on the wheel. Check and make sure they are not caked up with mud and debris. Sometimes that is the cause. And the easiest to fix.

The light on the dash is lit because the ABS senses a possible lockup condition possible in one of the wheels. This is usually due to one of the wheels sensors not sending a low voltage signal to the ECU. This will cause the light on the dash to illuminate. If the individual wheel sensors, which monitor the rotation of each wheel are not clocked up with dirt then check the wiring for each to see if there is a break somewhere along the line. Each electrical connection will go back to the ECU.

YOu did not say, but I will add; if your brakes appear to be responding normally then only the ABS system (with light lit) has been disabled, you still have normal braking function, just not ABS capabilities. HOwever, if you feel a difference in the braking of your car (mushy pedal, extended stopping distance, etc) bring the vehicle immediately to a tech who can repair the brake systems.

Thanks, I appreciate the input. I will check all the wheels before anything else.
