what could cause my rear lights to stay on with key out of the ignition?

When I kill my suv my rear lights stay on and cause my battery to die.

No,gives off very little amps.sounds like its not grounded properly.(wires)or your instrument panel for lights .has a contact switch.is definitely broke

Do not know if this pertains to your 2002 model, but my newer truck keeps the lights on for several seconds after the key is removed. Does your vehicle have the same device? If so check the relay. If it is the brake lights that stay on the problem is there.
