I have a 2002 Explorer XLT that begins to run 'rough' when it gets uparound 40 mph. It starts okay and seems to run okay. Any ideas??

it sounds like the lock out on your tork converter is going bad.
Is that an expensive repair?? Thanks for your input.
it can be,around $1,500.00,the tranny has to come out,but their are also some scencors that could be bad,in that case you would have a service vehicle light on.

could be the tork converter,it was a problem for certain model years.
Wish I would have googled this BEFORE I bought this Explorer. You guys were right on pointing at the transmission. Apparently I should have been turning the overdrive switch OFF ... otherwise it's always on. WTF, Ford??? Shouldn't the option be to turn the O/D ON??? After googling it, I found this was the most common problem (out of 2200 problems/complaints!!) that Ford had with the Explorer that year. I called Ford Customer Care and guess what? They didn't care. I was told if this had happened four years ago, Ford would have done a goodwill repair, but because it took 8 years to rack up 90,000 miles (which is where the transmission goes bad) they won't do anything about it. I loved the truck - it still looks new, but I'm going back to GM! I grew up in a GM family, married a Ford man, fell in love with my '92 Explorer, and fell out of love with Ford.
