Stuck in 4x4 lpw

My 02 ford explorer 4wd is stuck in 4x4 low and
won't disengage I have tried putting in reverse and
disconnecting the battery  (does it have to be
disconnected for 15+ mins?)

When it's cold the transfer case motor will stick. Hit it with a rubber mallet. It should free it up.
