sometimes one headlight wouldn't turn on or
with notice one would shut off. i cant seem
to figure out why.

Always start by checking the bulb. Filaments in non led bulbs can bounce in and out for connection. Take the bulb out, don't touch the clear part or the end because the oils on your fingers can melt the housing. Only touch it at the bottom where it goes into the socket. When you look at the bulb, see if there is a loose piece of metal bouncing around.
