Ford escape 2006 gear selection is messed up

Hi i went too start my car this morning and when i
took it out of park and put it in reverse on the
dashboard it said it was in drive and moving
forward then i put it in drive and it said it was in
neutral, now when i put it in park it goes to gear
one or two. So i switched the car off and
sometimes it wont switch back on? Is this a
problem with the gearbox or gear selector? I cant
figure out if its a mechanical or electrical problem
