Your Ford Escape SHOULD be a 4wd, there is normally a switch on the console that you can flip to 4WD when you need it, and it says "Auto" and "4WD" on it. Took me a bit to figure it out myself. When it's on there is a light on the dash that shows up as 4X4 so if you haven't seen the light, you haven't had it on. Mine is on the left, below the gear shift and wiper blade sticks... Beside the console for the air conditioner. Have you checked there?
