Crown Victoria transmission problem

Symptoms:
jerk with grinding sound when shifting into reverse
scrape or grinding sound when shifting into drive
Shudder at acceleration when reaching 32 mph or so
whining/howling sound at ignition and increased with acceleration

Previous owner had no records indicating transmission was replaced/rebuilt so I was guessing it was probably not done but just wanted to make sure before I make final decision on repairs.
