I have a 2005 Silverado with 22,000 original miles. I recently changed out the battery for a new one. Now my volt gauge is pegged to the right, the needle sits on the battery icon when the truck is running. When I shut the truck off, the needle only returns to almost the half way mark. I checked the connections and had the alt checked out, those two things are okay. I was told I have a bad connection somewhere. The truck starts okay and when I put a meter on the battery, the voltage is normal, running and off. Any suggestions on what to look for or what it could be? I don't want to take it to the dealer if it's something simple.

Smack the dash and see if it drops. Sounds more like a gauge in the dash problem.

It is most likely the stepper motor in the gage that year truck along with others. You can smack the gage till you change color it want help you will need to change the stepper motor you need to change out all them because all of them will go out one by one. You can send it out to have it done there is a good guy on the Internet that does it for a living I had him do mine about a year ago he is at dr . speedometer.com he is very good.

Make sure you have a proper ground, and it is wired correctly. If the happened just when the battery was changed, make sure the alternator has the wires correct and connected.
